WHAT’S ON! MISSION IN THE COMMUNITY

Happy New Year

12/27/2018

I can't believe how fast 2018 flew by! I guess that’s what happens when you're having fun. My rookie year as the owner of What's On! has taught me so much and allowed me to meet some amazing people. I'm extremely thankful to all the businesses, organizations and friends who have supported me on this venture. It has been exciting to see Mission’s businesses, organizations and the sense of community grow throughout the year. I listened to stories and learned from the people that make Mission so rich and diverse. When reflecting on 2018, I love knowing that Mission comes together in times of need and in times of celebration. When you browse through What’s On!, I hope you can see our Mission as I do.

Written every year by Camille Atebe, the ONTS Panto is based on the British traditional pantomime, in which a familiar fairy tale is retold using cross-dressing, popular music and the interference of a good and a bad fairy. Mission isn't in the UK though, and has a very multicultural citizenry, so our take on the old tradition is a little different. The ONTS Panto has the cross-dressing in a dame (A man playing the role of a woman, usually an older character) and the principal boy and principal girl are both played by women. The music, all played live by talented musician Mark Humpage (with additional accompaniment by Sofya Bice, Petra Atebe and Les Hatklin) is a mash-up of popular tunes with the words changed around. And the meddling Fairies who vie to influence the story are Fairy Nice (Jennie Bice) and Fairy Naughty (Camille Atebe). This year Rumpelstiltskin does the right thing when he helps the poor pinecone sorter Eloise win the affections of the King by spinning straw into gold for her, but Fairy Naughty worms her way in and convinces him to ask for Eloise's first born child as payment. Will Fairy Nice manage to talk him out of it? Or will Eloise gain a kingdom but lose a child? Get your tickets now and find out!

Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for children (ages 2-12) or $35 for a family of 5, and are available at www.openingnitetheatre.com, [email protected], 604-826-6687 or at the door at 33223Railway Ave. before the show. Rumpelstiltskin runs Dec 14-23 and Jan 4-13, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm. Doors open an hour before the show.

Ed & Cathy's Christmas Dinner

12/2/2018

As we head into the holiday season, Ed & Cathy's Annual Christmas Dinner is a reminder of the spirit and tradition of giving.

Ed Williams remembers Christmas dinners surrounded by both strangers and neighbours alike. His mother would open her doors every Christmas and feed anyone who happened to stop by, whether they needed a warm meal, a jacket, or a friendly hug for the holidays. About eight years ago, due to illness, his mother was unable to continue this tradition. So, Ed and his wife Cathy have continued to open their doors and hearts every Christmas; their daughter Sherry baking pies for dessert and other family members pitching in to help. Year after year, out of their three-bedroom home, they would feed up to 100 people, never asking for anything in return. Last Christmas, because of Ed's health issues, Pastor Ken opened up Bethel Church and volunteered his congregation to help Ed feed up to 400 people.

Thank you for carrying on this tradition!
